Announcing the November *Monthly Midnight Watch* Pick!
It's a book club, but with shows instead.
I love a book club. My friend Sarah and I started one after grad school with a couple friends and it’s still going strong! Shamefully, I’ve actually been the most delinquent member, popping in and out inconsistently over the last year or so. Sometimes I don’t read the book and just attend for the fellowship and libations.
Anyways! What I do love about a book club is simple: reading a quality book in a defined period of time and then getting to discuss it in-depth with some friends. I want to do something very similar but with shows — limited series mostly.
That something I’m calling the Monthly Midnight Watch. At the top of every month, I’ll select a limited series for us all to watch and at the end of the month, we’ll discuss the series via Discussion Threads on Substack and I’ll publish a podcast episode where I’ll dissect the show to bits, maybe solo or maybe with a friend.
Our inaugural November pick: Daisy Jones and the Six.
Daisy Jones and the Six was one of my absolute favorite shows of the year. I watched it a few months back and was unhealthily OBSESSED. It deserves a rewatch.
Here’s a bit about the show…
Daisy Jones & the Six follows the fictional titular 1970s rock band fronted by two feuding yet charismatic lead singers, Daisy Jones and Billy Dunne. Drawn together by personal and artistic chemistry, their complicated musical partnership catapulted the band from obscurity to unbelievable fame. Then, after a sold-out show at Chicago's Soldier Field, they suddenly called it quits. Now, decades later, through a documentary style series of interviews with the members and footage of concerts and recording sessions, the band members finally agree to reveal the truth. Set to the soundtrack of original music from Daisy Jones and The Six, complete with vocals by series leads Riley Keough (granddaughter of Elvis Presley) and Sam Claflin, this is the story of how an iconic band imploded at the height of its powers.
The series is based on Taylor Jenkins Reid's New York Times best-selling book of the same name, which the author describes was partly inspired by the band Fleetwood Mac.
When I first watched Daisy Jones and the Six, I did so solo and afterwards would talk Nate’s head off about it any chance I could. The music, the central love story, the DRAMA, the sex, drugs, and rock and roll of it all, and the ACTING bitch! The 70s has always been one of the most fascinating time periods to me and this show had me experiencing serious FOMO. I’m so looking forward to a re-watch with y’all.

I cannot wait!!!
I gotta check out that audiobook! Yea I dunno how the book readers feel about the series. There’s always book loyalists. My one friend who read it, loved the show. I say give it a shot and decide for yourself!
i read the book (audiobook is narrated by major heavy hitters like benjamin bratt, judy greer & jennifer beals!) and really enjoyed it but was surprised to hear the show was disappointing. so i haven’t watched. may watch it to discuss with y’all!
