Ok, I’m about two months late but I’m really hoping there’s someone who stuck around and watched Small Axe with me this month for the Monthly Midnight Watch….?!
My brother Dorian, sister Jessica, and I recorded a really fun podcast episode, again leaving no stone unturned as we unabashedly overanalyzed every morsel of the series, our first-generation American identities, our Jamaican-American identities, and our privilege. That episode will drop ASAP!
Until then, I desperately want to hear from you! I’m curious:
Which movie in the series was your favorite?
Often times, civil rights stories and movies end with murder and injustice. The heroes become martyred. I was truly amazed that everyone in Mangrove lived. Did this also stand out to you?
“Self-movement - it’s the right thing to do.” “The system is rigged, it’s rotten.” Which is it? What do we do?
Frank in Mangrove was lowkey sleeping with a white girl. What was that about?
To the non-Caribbean people: did Lovers Rock connect with you at all?
For the Caribbean people: how were the accents?
In Red, White and Blue, was Leroy a hero or a fool?
The black person raised in a predominantly white environment who has a very low salience to their racial identity. Anyone else fascinated by this archetype?
Low expectations is the biggest enemy of black students. Would you agree?
So excited for this episode! I'd say my favorite movie was the first one...I think it set up the rest of the series really well and gave a lot of insight into the time and place. But I also couldn't look away during Red, White, and Blue....made me think of the confusion I feel when I see a black NYPD officer. And then of course in the last episode I just wanted to run in there to give Kingsley a hug and intervene.
Apart from witnessing the prejudice, adversities, and racism that occurred, I loved the insight into Caribbean immigrant culture through the show. So beautifully done. Can't wait to hear the Scott siblings' take!
My favorite was Mangrove too! And I had similar sentiments for Red, White, and Blue. We made our best attempts to understand Leroy and black cops’ decisions :/
