'Unconfirmed': Potential diplomatic fallout between Verraland and Atovia raises eyebrows
Resident consuls have questioned recent foreign policy efforts undertaken since the proclamation of the Republic, amidst a rumored diplomatic rift between Verraland and Atovia.
Described as a “pastiche” of the Italian city-state of Florence, the Republic of Verraland first emerged as a separate and independent entity following the proclamation of the Republic on February 25, 2024. Since then, under the reign of Eduardo Daniele, Verraland has augmented its foreign policy initiatives to focus primarily on matters pertaining to the Long Island sector; Verraland holds an esteemed position in the Treaty Establishing the Micronational Community on Long Island.
Pre-proclamation Verraland was an entirely different narrative, preparing for a potential autonomous status in the Kingdom of Atovia, renewing its consolidation into Atovia since the dissolution of the former province of Verraland-Sylvana. This plan was immediately scrapped pursuant to the proclamation, and Atovian and Verraland relations have effectively halted.
Since then, Verraland has been engaging with other micronational entities, hoping to broker treaties of mutual recognition. The process, according to Gonfalonier Eduardo Daniele, has been slow, to say the least:
“We want to echo the virtues of Italian city-state governence through carefully crafted diplomatic inititives, and yet our diplomatic performance is slow and ardgeous. Such is the case when you have ‘just entered’ the world’s stage.”
Resident consuls who regularly confide with the Gonfalonier have circulated a rumor that Atovia’s silence is a sign of “diplomatic fallout,” harming what Daniele describes as a de-facto “special relationship.” Despite their respective distances both domestically and sectorally (Ohio and New York), the two micronations have had a shared history pre-dating Verraland in the former Federated States of Transterra in 2018, with the King of Atovia lending a helpful hand in drafting Transterra’s constitution.
“We understand that Atovia’s silence raises alarm amongst the resident consuls, but this rumor [diplomatic fallout] is just that, a rumor. It is unconfirmed whether our relations have soured, and we cannot assume the worst at such an early stage.”
