This substack is part of an ongoing series, examining the parallels between the 1930s and the 2020s. Numerous parallels can be drawn between the two eras, which is a useful tool when attempting to discern trend-lines in predictive analysis. Post 60 examined Poland, Post 63 examined Germany, and this post focuses on Italy.
BLUF: There are numerous similarities between 1930s Italy and Present Day, to include an overlap in the areas of immigration, food insecurity, financial and economic woes, brewing xenophobia, and rising populist sentiment - precursors for war.
Introduction:
Continuing the theme of Post 60, and Post 63 the introduction will consist of key parallels between two seemingly disparate time periods. Although much has changed, many underlying trends are eerily similar. This article will focus on Italy, as a case study. This introduction will more specifically examine the role of food insecurity in shaping 1930s Italy, as well as immigration challenges, and political responses. Finally, an examination of the parallels that exist between 1930s Italy and Modern Italy will tie all these ideas together.
Food insecurity played a pivotal role in shaping and influencing both 1930s Italy and modern Italy (less so), with historical parallels revealing recurring themes of economic hardship, immigration anxieties, and debates about national identity.
In both eras, economic challenges fueled concerns about immigration, often driven by fears of competition for jobs and resources. During the 1930s, the Great Depression resulted in high unemployment, prompting scapegoating of immigrants for economic woes. Similarly, in modern Italy, economic recessions and financial instability can amplify anti-immigrant sentiment, with some perceiving immigrants as burdens or threats to job security.
Debates about national identity and cultural assimilation were prevalent in both periods. In the 1930s, Mussolini's regime championed a strong sense of Italian nationalism, leading to the exclusion and marginalization of immigrants. In contemporary Italy, discussions about cultural integration and the preservation of Italian traditions intersect with immigration policies, sparking calls for stricter controls or assimilation measures.
Both historical eras also witnessed episodes of scapegoating and prejudice directed towards immigrants. In the 1930s, certain ethnic groups, particularly Jews, faced discrimination and persecution. Similarly, in modern Italy, immigrants, especially those from non-European countries, are susceptible to prejudice and social exclusion, including instances of racial profiling and hate crimes.
The resonance between these two periods highlights the enduring nature of certain challenges. Economic hardships, immigration anxieties, and debates about identity persist across time, emphasizing the need for a nuanced understanding of historical patterns to navigate contemporary complexities.
Below this substack will use recent headlines and videos to demonstrate recent trends. A brief look at Italy’s history will be provided as a lens to better understand the context of unfolding events, followed by flashpoints for possible escalation in key arenas that could lead to economic hardship, civil unrest, and war.
