When I hear the word Oklahoma, I think of the song Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin’ written by Rodgers and Hammerstein, but there is also another noise from that state or the state of mind, and it’s the trio Winter Boys. Their album is September September, (Clerestory AV), and it’s an enticing piece of work. I know nothing of the band, but I feel like I’m listening to something from Broadway culture that went through the backdoor of pure Jewell-like pop. It’s not Chicago or Oklahoma, but it is an aural theater in this beautifully produced work.
There are various keyboards, electronic as well as acoustic instrumentation, and the music is orchestrated that serve the lyrics and melodies. There is a small room sound but with the windows open for expansion. Winter Boys are based in Oklahoma, which in my romantic mind is a vast and endless land, and September September is an album that fits that increase in size. Thirty minutes long, with no wasted breath, the songs are bouncy and pretty, and it’s a very sophisticated sound. The song that does it for me is Corridor. Starts off with piano and voice, and it builds into a beautiful widescreen ballad. Maybe a power ballad, but it doesn’t matter; it does the magic to my head and ears. To give credit to the band, they are Tyson Meade, Jesse Tobish, and Aaron Frisby. And it is a beautiful morning.
