Silver Charm: As Tenacious as They Come
There are a variety of reasons to explain why a long list of outstanding horses were thwarted in their bid to become the 12th Triple Crown champion.
Some are predictable; others are surprising.
Premature moves, suicidal paces, injuries, medications, exhaustion and even a safety pin have all played a role in a drought that stood at 37 years until American Pharoah completed the sweep in 2015.
There was also one odd but utterly revealing reason that spoke volumes about the tenacity and competitiveness of a colt who fell less than a length shy of racing immortality.
In 1997, Bob and Beverly Lewis’ Silver Charm came into the Belmont Stakes seeking to add the final jewel in the Triple Crown to his previous wins in the Kentucky Derby and Preakness and complete the sweep for the first time since Affirmed in 1978. At the eighth pole, he led by a half-length over Free House, the horse he had beaten by a head three weeks earlier in the Preakness. But on that June afternoon, after prevailing in stirring stretch duels in both the Kentucky Derby and Preakness, he could not repulse a final surge outside of him by Touch Gold in the center of the track.
Why?
“Silver Charm just never saw that horse,” trainer Bob Baffert said in the minutes after the race. “When he got by Free House, he thought he was done. … That’s the only way you can beat Silver Charm, if he doesn't see you coming.”

If any trainer has a reason to develop Kentucky Derby (G1) Fever, it's Christophe Clement.
In a Hall of Fame-worthy career that dates to 1991, Clement has won 2,447 races, more than 560 stakes, and has earnings of $170.4 million to place 12th on the all-time list.
He's won a Triple Crown event and a Breeders' Cup race.
Yet missing from that sparkling resume is mention of the Kentucky Derby. In more than 30 years of training on the sport's premier circuits, he has yet to send out a starter in the opening leg of the Triple Crown. That could all change in four weeks, thanks to the 3-year-old Liam's Map colt Deterministic , who won the Gotham Stakes (G3) a month ago at Aqueduct Racetrack and is 14th on the Kentucky Derby Leaderboard.
Yet if you want to end a conversation with the 58-year-old Clement, just mention the Kentucky Derby.

A lawsuit filed by a thoroughbred owner Wednesday in Louisville seeks a temporary injunction that would allow Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert to enter horses in next month’s 150th running of the Kentucky Derby.
Amr Zedan, one of Baffert’s top clients, filed a civil lawsuit in Jefferson County that would allow Zedan horses and others trained by Baffert to run in the May 4 Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs. The Los Angeles Times was the first to report the lawsuit.
Baffert is not a party to the lawsuit. He was not immediately available for comment.
