UXH Mixology #5: Fired!
In this edition: Introducing Weekend Hackathons, Apple Tax and OpenAI's Sam Altman is fired
Hello there! It's been an interesting week: India reached the World Cup Final, at UXHack we launched our first Hackathon after nearly two years and if all this wasn't exciting enough, the man who's been ruling the tech scene for the last year plus, just got fired. Whew!
So there is lots to talk about...
🌏 Product & Design News:
Sam Altman fired as CEO of OpenAI
It isn't April 1 and this isn't a prank, no matter how much it sounds like one. Apparently, Altman was fired by OpenAI's board because, wait for it... 'Altman was not consistently candid in his communications with the board, hindering its ability to exercise its responsibilities. The board no longer has confidence in his ability to continue leading OpenAI.'
Ohkaaay! That's a new one: consistently candid.
Meanwhile, theories abound as to the real reason for the departure: From Microsoft being blamed, to you know who (Elon) being responsible. Whatever the reason, we are sure it's complicated.
Alphabet pays Apple 36% of Safari search revenue, Sundar Pichai confirms
So now we know, and from Pichai himself. More than Google, we are looking at you Apple. All that talk of Privacy and we value your data.. Yada… Yada.. is just.. talk?
This will have repercussions, even if Google was the best option Apple had.

1. Weekend Hackathons - Launch blog post
Our first hackathon in nearly 2 years and we have a completely new, shorter format. Basically, participants need to improve one screen (and one screen only) over a weekend. Our first challenge is on Hotstar's MaxView
This time we are opening up new ways to participate in these hackathons, especially for experienced designers and PMs:

2. The worst job - Chief Design Officer, Microsoft
Not a read, but a hilarious and ironic watch. One would think the gentleman was just trolling the comedians on stage. But no. He is the real deal: Michael Gough, formerly Chief Design Officer at Microsoft and later worked at Uber (VP, Product Design) . The best part is when he says: My biggest thing, never shipped. Mind blown.

What Akshay is watching this week
Well, everyone will be glued to the World Cup final. I will be too. But I’ll have one eye on the Las Vegas F1 Grand Prix. If free practice is any indicator, expecting some fireworks, literally.
And that is a wrap!
Will it be Shami or Virat that will win us the final on Sunday? As a now famous ad goes: ‘Yeh Shami-Virat ka time nahi, yeh India India ka time hai’
India! India! 🇮🇳
Hope you enjoy a great Final. We’ll see you next week.
Buh-bye👋
