I just found out that Shelly is Little Simz (if you’re a Top Boy fan, you’ll know what I’m talking about). I was so shocked when I found out because I had watched Top Boy before I started listening to Little Simz. When I finally saw what she looked like, she looked so familiar like I had definitely seen her before but I couldn’t place where. I just assumed she had one of those “common” faces and left it. I would have never guessed that she was SHELLEY. Well s/o to Leera for telling me. I was actually telling Leera about how Point and Kill is such a good song and she was telling me how much she liked Little Simz and how good she is at the things she does. Then she told me that she was in Top Boy and I was lost for words😂.
Anyways, Point and Kill by Little Simz and Obongjayaar is such an amazing song. The words, the lyrics, and Obongjayaar’s unduplicatable voice mixed with Little Simz unique flow is just great.
After our call, I listened to the song again before I went to bed. The message in the song is basically what inspired this piece (i don’t know if to keep calling them pieces or to start calling them issues, issues seems serious and I’m deeply unserious😭).
In Nigeria, Point and Kill can be a barbecue/bar type of vibe or it can be an abattoir. Basically, there are a bunch of animals, it can be a bunch of chickens or goats or fish, that have been reared to be eaten. You, the customer, come and you pick an animal and it gets killed and barbecued for you (if it’s in a bar) or killed and packed for you (if it’s an abattoir). So you literally point at it and it’s killed for you.
In the song, Little Simz and Obongjayaar spoke about determination, focus, and striving to get what you want. Using Point and Kill is a very intelligent reference in my opinion simply because of the precision of it. When I listened to the song, it really resonated with me. I want a lot of things right now that seem very far away but I’m sure I’ll get for some reason and listening to song just kind of motivated me to keep striving.
I’m going to talk a bit about what I picked up from the song, we’ll just take them one by one.
They said,
“Point and Kill.
If I want it, it’s mine.
You can’t stop me.”
Point and kill.
What do you want for yourself? What do see that you’d like? What do you not see that you’d know would be a good fit for you? For example, I’ve never actually seen a Forbes 30 under 30 list but having my name on that list no go bad for real.
This part is essentially saying that you just have to identify what you want, or identify what you already have and are not utilizing, and put it in perspective.
If I want it, it’s mine
That thing you want, is that thing something you can realistically do? Or realistically have? Obviously nobody should be out here chasing clouds but if it is (and most of the time it is because we underestimate God and ourselves a lot) then you have to have a tunnel vision. It’s really you against you in this world. You have to realize that you are your only competition and, in practicality, no one is better or worse of than you.
You also need to believe that you can get what you want. Even though you may not know how it’s going to come or how you’re going to go about it, you have to actually think that you can get it and do something about getting it.
You have to focus and put some effort into it. You can talk and talk and talk but if you don’t do, nothing will happen.
As long as you can think it and envision how to go about it to a certain degree, there’s a 90% chance that you can probably do it.
You can’t stop me.
This may look like it means “success at all costs” but, depending on how you look at it, it actually isn’t.
There will be a lot of people in your life that don’t want you to go far and don’t want you to make progress. Some may come straight up and state their intentions directly or indirectly, the others may be, just as Little Simz said, snakes in the grass, no trust am. People will pretend that they’re for you and pretend to be supporting you but they are really just waiting for an opportunity to tear you down so you have to keep your guard up. I’m not saying be paranoid but you have to protect yourself and your interests. point and kill any impostor. Please don’t literally kill anyone. When things are going left with the people around you, you owe it to yourself to act accordingly.
From another angle, there’s another group of people who will try to dictate to you what you should or shouldn’t be doing, or how you should be doing what you’re doing. Some may have good intentions, some may not but what you should be, first, is self aware. Always be willing to learn, but know what works for you and what is good for you, and if it really isn’t good for you, please take advice from people who love you.
Know at the back of your mind that whenever you wake up is your morning. Not everyone’s method is the same, not everyone’s timeline is the same. Some things may come now for you and some may come later but what is for you will come to you. Just keep praying and working.
Another important line I didn’t mention was,
“I do as I want, I do as I like
I no watch face, I no fear nobody”
Never do anything for anyone. Whatever you’re doing as regards your future, should be what is best for YOU (except you have kids, then you do what’s best for all of you). You can’t make decisions because they’ll make this person happy or that person impressed or that person proud. You have to go with the method that works best for you and your life, and your balance, and your mental.
Eye service shouldn’t ever be an option. “Lemme act like this because I don’t want people to say X” or “lemme wear this instead or do this instead because I don’t want people to think Z.” Look, if you do what you want to do, they’re going to talk. If you do something other than what you want to do, they’ll talk. If you do nothing, they’ll talk. People will talk regardless. As long as what you’re doing is right, and legal, don’t be pressured or influenced by what others are saying. If you choose to do what they are saying, let that be your authentic and genuine decision for yourself and not a result of influence.
Trust yourself and trust God. I love you and I’m rooting for you and you can do whatever you set your mind to. I actually mean that, I’m not trying to be corny, I’m actually being serious, just try. If you never try, how would you know?
