Um, NONE of that was tone while it was happening. Instead we got "quick and devastating" takedowns of the Great Barrington Declarations, "follow the Science" and if you didn't everyone was going to die. This is all so ridiculously dishonest.
Fauci epitomizes the situation for so many "leaders" who made profound errors in judgement, failed to adjust based on reality as new information became available, and continued to pronounce their initial assessments as forever correct. Whether it be arrogance, fear of losing control acquired over large segments of the population, or more heinous attributes, Fauci and those like him will never admit their mistakes for fear of civil, criminal, and above all reputational legacy risks. “Closed schools for to 4-6 weeks”? How about 4-6 months and longer! As well as the stupid masking requirements and social distancing in schools when they did go back to ‘in person’ learning. How about the EUA vaxx mandates for kids to participate in extracurricular sports! A vaxx (still with EUA status) that is now known to cause myocarditis in fit and active young people!
The policies that were recommended by the EVIL Dr. Fauci and were dutifully followed by school districts, & State & Local Government’s (so that they could get Federal & State ‘Covid’ funds)! This whole Scamdemic will continue it’s ripple of repercussions for kids and even us older folks, for the rest of our lives and theirs!
The number of kids with anxiety and depression, the number of kids who gained weight, lost momentum to be active, kids (particulalry pre teen and teens) who became screen addicts, the younger children have significant language loss, and many other deleterious long term effects will never be properly measured. I am not just sickened by Fauci but by the leaders in our blue states (medicine, education) who bought into the whole crock of shit.
Fauci's reputation will be ashes. More than anything, I want him figuratively tarred and feathered. I want him and the feckless doctors and researchers who toed the line for grant money to be the face of ignorance and negligence.
But ten years from now when the covidians wake up from the stupor, they'll all claim they were against Fauci even as they surreptitiously take the Fauci bobblehead dolls off of their mantle.

And regarding California schools - many schools weren't Open AND Normal in Spring 2021. It was a hybrid model with half day teaching until May/June 2021.
AND NOW - FALL 2022 - kids are STILL being required to stay home 10 days after symptom onset if covid tests come back positive. An adult can fly with a mask after 5 days, BUT KIDS HAVE TO STAY HOME FOR 10 days! STILL. (Redwood City Public School district in particular) So a kid's fever with Covid could break on day 3, but the "24 hours after fever breaks, come back to school rule" doesn't apply here. It's until a negative test or 10 days after symptom onset. So a kid can miss almost 1.5 weeks of school over a mild disease.

Society will forever be the loser with the continued shutdowns and closures that occurred even after the vaccine was available,! My friend told us of their loss when their Granddaughter completed her Air Force training and their traditional graduation was cancelled. Her Grandfather was a veteran and double vaccinated and although elderly was planning on attending this great event. The federal government just cancelled and these grads just never received any recognition for their hard work,
If I were Fauci, I would make the same statements. There will be many devastated parents who swallowed the vaccine rhetoric and lost children or are coping with disabled children, and maybe (eventually) prison sentences for some who willfully falsified information. He's smart to insist that his decisions were based on "all availble data at the time".
He's probably watching the situation with Fat Leonard to see if Venezuela will extradite. Maybe South Africa, but there might be too much history of HIV drug injury for his safety there.
