🖐🏽 "I Got 5 On It": Best Beat of the 90s?
My son turned 5 a couple days ago. We celebrated this past weekend and had a freaking blast! We fried fish on Friday, did the trampoline park with family and friends on Saturday, and he opened presents at several moments in between. It was a hoot 🦉
So... in celebration of his new year of life, I do what I always do. Write Eli a poem for him to laugh and/or cry at years from now.
Here's what I did when he was turning 2.
Four.
And now, today's, which is entitled "I Got 5 On It".
But, enough about The Boy. Love you, son but it's grown folks' time now.
I wrote this because I think Luniz' "I Got 5 On It" is the best Hip-Hop beat of the 90s (and also a helluva name for a birthday poem 🤷🏽♂️).
It's singular in its sound, which isn't a necessity for a good beat, but being able to say "I ain't never heard no shit like this before" helps out a hell of a lot in discussions like this.
☝🏽 Annnnd, speaking of discussions - it got me thinking, what are some of the other great beats of the 90s?
Did a song just instantly pop in your head? If not, are you down to put some thought into it? I hope so... That'll make this fun! 🙏🏽
I would love it if everyone replied to this email with your fav beats of the 90s and I'll compile the results and see if we can land this plane. It may be hard to beat me, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't try.
For Lack of a Wetter Bird, there is no 90s Hip-Hop beat better than Luniz' "I Got 5 On It".
