Lincoln Celebration across District 8
As we celebrate our past presidents and their sacrifices for our country, it is important to remember the history of Presidents’ Day and what it represents. Presidents’ Day is a federal holiday created in 1879, specifically celebrating George Washington's birthday on February 22nd.
In 1971, under the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, Presidents’ Day was moved to the third Monday in February. Many people and States celebrate George Washington and all past U.S. Presidents, including Abraham Lincoln.
President George Washington played a pivotal role in the Revolutionary War; without him, our Country would not exist as we know it today.
Just days before the Declaration of Independence was adopted by the Continental Congress in 1776, George Washington stated,
"The time is now near at hand which must probably determine whether Americans are to be freemen or slaves; whether they are to have any property they can call their own; whether their houses and farms are to be pillaged and destroyed, and themselves consigned to a state of wretchedness from which no human efforts will deliver them.
The fate of unborn millions will now depend, under God, on the courage and conduct of this army. Our cruel and unrelenting enemy leaves us only the choice of brave resistance or the most abject submission. We have, therefore, to resolve to conquer or die.”
His words tell the importance of freedom and liberty, the sacrifices one must be willing to take, and living under God. We must never forget this.
The time is ours to take such a stand to protect the freedoms that these great men fought so hard to leave to our generation and those to come.
To celebrate, President Washington and our other Presidents, Legislative District 8 Republican Central Committees in Boise, Custer, Elmore, and Valley, are holding Lincoln Day dinner celebrations. I encourage you to take the time to attend one if you're available; these events are fun evenings, and they support the grassroots, bottom-up government involvement of the republican party.
